About Insurance Cancellation Calculator

Helping Canadians make informed decisions about insurance cancellations since 2024

Our Mission

Insurance Cancellation Calculator was created with a simple goal: to help Canadian policyholders understand exactly how much they will receive (or owe) when cancelling an insurance policy.

Too often, Canadians are surprised by unexpected cancellation fees when they need to cancel their auto or home insurance. The short rate cancellation system used by most Canadian insurers can result in significant penalties—sometimes hundreds of dollars—that policyholders don't anticipate.

We believe that transparency in insurance costs is a right, not a privilege. Our free tools empower you to calculate your exact refund or penalty before making any decisions, so you can plan accordingly and avoid financial surprises.

Why We Built This Tool

The idea for this calculator came from personal experience. Like many Canadians, our founder once needed to cancel an auto insurance policy mid-term. The insurance company quoted a refund amount that seemed surprisingly low. After researching short rate cancellation tables and doing manual calculations, it became clear that the penalty was legitimate—but the lack of accessible information made the process frustrating.

We discovered that while insurance companies are required to use standardized short rate tables, these tables are rarely shared with policyholders in an easy-to-understand format. Most people don't even know that "short rate" cancellation exists, let alone how it differs from "pro rata" cancellation.

That's why we built Insurance Cancellation Calculator—to bridge this knowledge gap and give every Canadian the tools to understand their insurance costs.

Our Data & Accuracy

We take accuracy seriously. Our short rate tables are compiled from:

  • Official insurance company documentation and policy wordings
  • Industry-standard short rate cancellation tables used across Canada
  • Regular updates to reflect any changes in insurer policies
  • Cross-verification with insurance industry professionals

While we strive for accuracy, please note that our calculations are estimates. Your actual refund or penalty may vary based on your specific policy terms, any applicable taxes, and your insurance company's current policies. We always recommend confirming the exact amount with your insurer before making final decisions.
